High Atlas Adventure: Telouet Kasbah, Ait Benhaddou & Ouarzazate
This fascinating Kasbahs and Ksars of the south day trip from Marrakech takes you across the dramatic landscapes of the High Atlas Mountains to discover some of Morocco’s most iconic historic sites. The journey follows the ancient caravan route that once connected the Sahara Desert with Marrakech, where traders transported gold, spices, salt, and other precious goods.
Along the way, you will visit impressive kasbahs (fortified palaces) and ksars (fortified villages) that represent traditional southern Moroccan architecture built from mud brick and earth. These historical structures once protected communities and served as strategic trading posts.
The tour combines spectacular mountain scenery, rich Berber culture, and UNESCO-listed heritage sites, making it one of the most rewarding cultural day trips from Marrakech.
Kasbahs and Ksars of the South Day Trip – Day Trip Details
Your adventure begins early in the morning with a scenic drive from Marrakech toward the High Atlas Mountains. The road climbs gradually through winding mountain landscapes until reaching the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), the highest paved mountain pass in Morocco.
This route offers breathtaking panoramic views of rugged mountain peaks, traditional Berber villages, and terraced valleys. Along the way there will be opportunities to stop for photos and admire the incredible scenery.
Telouet Kasbah – The Palace of the Glaoui
The first major stop of the tour is the village of Telouet, located on the ancient caravan route between Marrakech and the Sahara. Here you will visit the remarkable Telouet Kasbah, once the lavish residence and headquarters of the powerful Glaoui family, who ruled much of southern Morocco during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Although partly in ruins today, the kasbah still displays stunning decorative elements such as carved cedar ceilings, colorful zellige tiles, and intricate plasterwork that reflect the wealth and power of the Glaoui dynasty.
Your guide will explain the fascinating history of the kasbah and its important role in regional trade and politics.
Ait Benhaddou – UNESCO World Heritage Ksar
Continuing along a scenic back road through the Ounila Valley, you will arrive at the legendary Ksar of Ait Benhaddou, one of the most famous historic sites in Morocco.
This ancient fortified village is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its exceptional example of traditional southern Moroccan earthen architecture. The ksar consists of tightly packed houses surrounded by defensive walls and towers, built from clay and straw to blend perfectly with the surrounding desert landscape.
Ait Benhaddou has also become a popular filming location for international movies and TV series such as Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia.
During the guided visit, you will explore the narrow alleyways of the village and climb to the top of the hill for spectacular panoramic views of the valley.
Ouarzazate & Taourirt Kasbah
The next stop is Ouarzazate, often referred to as the “Gateway to the Sahara Desert.” Here you will visit the impressive Taourirt Kasbah, a vast fortified complex that once belonged to the Glaoui family.
This historic palace contains nearly 300 rooms, many of which feature traditional Moroccan decorative styles including carved wood, geometric tilework, and beautifully painted ceilings.
Taourirt Kasbah was once home to hundreds of people and served as a key administrative center controlling important trade routes that connected the Dades, Draa, and Ziz valleys.
You will have time to walk through the kasbah’s narrow passages and learn more about the history of desert caravan trade and regional power.
Return to Marrakech
In the late afternoon, the journey continues back through the High Atlas Mountains, offering more incredible views of valleys, traditional villages, and dramatic landscapes.
You will arrive back in Marrakech in the evening after a memorable day discovering the historic kasbahs and ksars of southern Morocco.
