Morocco Mountain and Desert Adventure – 5 Days

This 5-day adventure combines two of Morocco’s most iconic experiences — trekking to the summit of Mount Toubkal (4,167 m), the highest peak in North Africa, and exploring the breathtaking landscapes of the Sahara Desert.

Your journey begins in the High Atlas Mountains, where traditional Berber villages, dramatic valleys, and rugged mountain trails lead to the legendary summit of Mount Toubkal. The climb is challenging but extremely rewarding, offering spectacular panoramic views across the Atlas Mountains and far toward the Sahara Desert.

After conquering the summit, the adventure continues south across the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass, leading toward the famous valleys and kasbahs of southern Morocco.

The final part of the journey takes you to the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi near Merzouga, where you will enjoy a magical camel trek into the Sahara and spend a night in a traditional Berber desert camp under a sky full of stars.

This tour offers a perfect blend of mountain trekking, desert adventure, culture, and spectacular Moroccan landscapes.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Imlil – Sidi Chamharouch – Toubkal Refuge

Your adventure begins with a morning transfer from Marrakech to the mountain village of Imlil (1,740 m), the starting point for most treks in Toubkal National Park.

After meeting your local guide and trekking team, the journey begins along the scenic Mizane Valley. The trail passes through the picturesque Berber village of Aremd, surrounded by terraced fields and walnut trees.

Continuing along traditional mule paths, you will reach the sacred site of Sidi Chamharouch, a small shrine and resting point visited by pilgrims and trekkers alike.

From here the trail climbs steadily through rugged mountain terrain toward the Toubkal Refuge (3,207 m). The surrounding landscapes become more dramatic as you gain altitude, with spectacular views of the Atlas peaks.

After approximately 4 to 5 hours of trekking, you arrive at the refuge where you will spend the night.

Dinner and overnight stay at the mountain refuge.

Day 2: Toubkal Refuge – Mount Toubkal Summit – Imlil

Today is the highlight of the trek — the ascent of Mount Toubkal (4,167 m).

You will begin very early in the morning to reach the summit at sunrise. The trail climbs gradually through rocky slopes and mountain ridges toward the highest point in North Africa.

Although the route is technically straightforward, the altitude and loose scree require steady pacing and determination.

Reaching the summit is an unforgettable moment. From the top you will enjoy spectacular panoramic views across the Atlas Mountains, stretching north toward the Marrakech plains and south toward the Sahara Desert and Anti-Atlas Mountains.

After celebrating at the summit and taking photos, the trek descends back to the Toubkal Refuge, where you will stop for lunch.

The journey then continues downhill through the Mizane Valley back to Imlil village, where you will spend the night in a traditional guesthouse.

Approximate trekking time: 9–10 hours.

Day 3: Imlil – Tizi n’Tichka Pass – Dades Valley

After breakfast, the adventure continues with a scenic drive from the Atlas Mountains toward the Moroccan desert.

The journey crosses the spectacular Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the highest mountain road pass in Morocco. Along the way you will pass traditional Berber villages, dramatic mountain landscapes, and terraced fields.

As the landscape changes, the mountains gradually give way to desert valleys filled with palm groves and ancient kasbahs.

After lunch, continue toward the famous Valley of Roses before reaching the beautiful Dades Valley, often called the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs because of its many historic fortresses and traditional villages.

Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Dades Valley.

Day 4: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga – Sahara Camel Trek

After breakfast, travel toward one of Morocco’s most spectacular natural landmarks — Todra Gorge.

The towering canyon walls rise up to 600 meters high, creating an impressive natural corridor carved by the river over thousands of years. You will have time to walk through the gorge and enjoy the dramatic scenery.

The journey then continues toward Merzouga, the gateway to the Sahara Desert.

Upon arrival at the desert hotel near the dunes of Erg Chebbi, you will enjoy traditional Moroccan mint tea before preparing for your camel trekking experience.

Your camels will take you deep into the Sahara Desert, where towering sand dunes create a breathtaking landscape. The camel ride lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours as the sun begins to set over the dunes.

At the desert camp you will enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner followed by Berber music around the campfire beneath the star-filled desert sky.

Overnight stay in a comfortable Berber desert camp.

Day 5: Merzouga – Sahara Sunrise – Marrakech

Wake early to witness one of the most magical experiences of the Sahara — sunrise over the sand dunes.

After enjoying mint tea, you will ride your camels back to the hotel where breakfast will be served.

The journey then begins back toward Marrakech, traveling through the dramatic landscapes of southern Morocco and crossing the High Atlas Mountains once again via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass.

Along the way there will be stops for lunch and photos before arriving in Marrakech in the evening, marking the end of your unforgettable Mount Toubkal and Sahara Desert adventure.
