Mgoun Trek

The Mgoun Trek is one of the most spectacular and least crowded trekking adventures in Morocco. Located in the southern ridges of the High Atlas Mountains, the Mgoun region offers dramatic landscapes, high mountain passes, and deep cultural encounters far from mass tourism.

This 6-day Mgoun trekking tour is a high-altitude circuit through the Central Atlas, beginning in the lush Aït Bouguemez Valley—often called the Happy Valley. Along the way, you’ll experience vast green valleys, terraced farmlands, walnut groves, striking rock formations, and authentic Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides.

Above it all rises Mount M’Goun (4,068m), Morocco’s second-highest peak. Compared to Mount Toubkal, Mgoun is wilder, quieter, and for many trekkers, even more rewarding.

Tour Information

The Mgoun region is a remote and untamed area, receiving far fewer visitors than the Toubkal massif. Its simple infrastructure and isolation preserve a rare authenticity. The scenery is exceptionally varied: wide green valleys intersected by irrigation canals, extensive agricultural terraces, walnut forests, colorful rock formations, and high alpine plateaus.

The ascent of Mgoun is especially memorable. Instead of endless scree slopes, the route follows a dramatic high ridge—an exhilarating alpine traverse above a massive cirque. Wildlife sightings are possible, and lammergeiers (bearded vultures) are sometimes seen soaring near the summit.

This trek is ideal for adventurous hikers seeking solitude, high altitude trekking, and deep cultural immersion in Morocco.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – Agouti

In the morning, we depart Marrakech by minibus and drive toward the Central High Atlas, arriving in Agouti village, gateway to the Aït Bouguemez Valley. The scenic journey introduces changing landscapes, from plains to high mountain terrain.

Upon arrival in the late afternoon, there is time to relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the valley. Overnight in a local guesthouse.

Note: This itinerary is flexible and may be adjusted due to weather conditions or local considerations.

Day 2: Agouti – Arous Camp

We begin our trek, walking through fertile valleys and traditional Berber villages, following ancient paths used for generations. The route offers views of terraced fields and irrigation systems that sustain life in this remote region.

By afternoon, we reach Arous Camp, where we settle in for the night surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

Day 3: Tarkedit Plateau – Aghouri Pass (3,450m) – M’Goun West (3,978m)

Today is a spectacular high-mountain day. We ascend through a wild, rugged landscape toward the Aghouri Pass at 3,450 meters. From here, we descend slightly onto the vast Tarkedit Plateau (2,900m), a windswept high plain often dotted with snow patches.

After lunch near the plateau hut, we climb again to establish our camp at around 3,400m, directly beneath M’Goun West (3,978m). The afternoon is spent acclimatizing and enjoying the dramatic alpine surroundings. Overnight at high camp.

Day 4: Djebel M’Goun Summit (4,068m) – Azib Izabine

An early start for summit day. We ascend Djebel M’Goun, Morocco’s second-highest peak, following a long, exhilarating ridge that stays at or above 4,000 meters. The climb usually takes 4–5 hours, depending on conditions.

From the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views across the Draa Valley and, on clear days, toward the Sahara Desert to the south. After celebrating the achievement, we descend carefully to Azib Izabine, returning to camp.

Approx. 8–9 hours of trekki

Day 5: Azib Izabine – Ain Aflafal – Tighermet n’Aït Ahmed

We descend gradually through a scenic valley, passing shepherd camps and seasonal grazing areas. The trail follows the river down to Ain Aflafal, then continues toward Tighermet n’Aït Ahmed.

This is a more relaxed trekking day, allowing time to absorb the landscape and local life. Camp overnight.

Approx. 5 hours walking.

Day 6: Tizi n’Aït Imi (2,960m) – Aït Bouguemez – Marrakech

Our final trekking day begins with a climb to Tizi n’Aït Imi Pass (2,960m), offering one last sweeping view of the High Atlas Mountains. From here, we descend into the Aït Bouguemez Valley, where our vehicle awaits.

We then drive back to Marrakech, arriving in the evening and marking the end of an unforgettable Mgoun trekking adventure.
